Austin Wayne Self Delivers a Great Show for Sport Clips Haircuts in 2012 Season Opener

(March 19, 2012) — Huntersville, NC

After qualifying 20th in a field of 22 NASCAR Late Models, Austin drove the Sport Clips 07 Chevrolet to a Top 5 finish at the Southern National Motorsports Park season opener.

“Austin just set the stage for the season with these guys (referring to the Sellers 07 crew) the way he absolutely drove the wheels off of that car,” said HC Sellers owner of the 07 Chevrolet.  “We were all very impressed to say the least. He drove way beyond our expectations. Based on what we saw here tonight, this is going to be a great season for the crew of the 07 Chevrolet.”

“We had a great race car today. The Sport Clips 07 Chevrolet was fast and would run anywhere on the track. Peyton, Brian, Fulton, Fred and the Sellers crew did a great job setting the car up and talking me through this race. I have to give these guys a lot of credit especially for having so little time to test at this track,” says Austin.  “A top 5 finish in our 1st race after qualifying 20th.  Only a win could have been better than that.”

“We took on two right side tires for the second leg and thought we would have something for the race leaders. But when the sun went down and every thing started cooling off we started getting a lot of grip. All the yellows that came made things worse. The car started getting tight on entry and I just couldn’t get it to the bottom of the track.  But it was great being on the outside and running two wide up front. That’s what the fans like so I think we gave a good show in the second run. I made a couple of mistakes at the end. Otherwise I think we could have delivered another top 5.”

“This (Southern National) is a great facility and a great crowd. I have to thank Mike (Diaz), Jerry (Brown) and Jim (Dean) for giving us all such a great place to race. There was a lot of talent racing here today, and they race hard but clean. I look forward to more here this season.  Thanks all of my fans that support me every day. Please keep it up.“

“Finally, thanks to Ed and the whole North Carolina Sport Clips team for their support. We couldn’t be here without you guys. I’ll definitely be at the Wilson shop for another haircut at the end of the month so they better have those hot towels ready!”

“I give God all the glory for our performance here today and look forward to being back here in two weeks,” finishes Austin.

“HC is absolutely right, Austin did drive the wheels of that car today,” say Peyton Sellers.  “Also, I agree with Austin, I think he was a little slow on the up-shifting on two of those last restarts and then he took the inside row on that last restart when he should have taken the outside. It cost us 2 or 3 spots for sure. But more than anything, I’m just proud of this team. We have been waiting 3 weeks for this race.  The whole team did a great job. Especially when you consider this was their 1st race together. They should just get better and faster from this point on. We race South Boston next weekend and then will be back here. We can’t wait.”

“It would have been great if he could have put the Sport Clips Chevrolet in the winners circle today, but I’m not sure it would have been as exciting as watching our car go from the back of the field to the front,” says Ed Majeski owner of Sport Clips locations in Wilson, Greenville, and Wilmington. I thought we saw it all in the first race, but then to see the Sport Clips Chevrolet on the outside front row during the second race restarts that was just cool. We are excited about supporting Austin’s NASCAR campaign this season. It was a very good day at Southern National and I am sure we picked up a bunch of new fans here in East Central North Carolina.  Congratulations to Austin and the Sellers crew on their performance here today. I bet the fans are looking forward to watching the Sport Clips car at the next race here.”
