ELKHART LAKE, Wisc. – Revving up for back-to-back road courses, Austin Wayne Self will make a return to the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards to compete in Sunday afternoon’s Road America 100 driving for AM Racing and their development partner Win-Tron Racing.
Noted as a huge fan of road courses, Self will drive the No. 33 Don’t mess with Texas Toyota Camry at Road America’s 4.048 course and look for his first top-10 finish in ARCA competition since August 2015.
“I’m really grateful for this opportunity to drive for Win-Tron Racing and carry the Don’t mess with Texas colors this weekend at Road America,” said Self. “I love competing in ARCA. It’s a great series with a lot of competition and talent. It’s going to be a fun weekend.”
AM Racing and Self are utilizing the ARCA road race to prepare the Austin, Texas native for his return to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park where he’ll compete in the Canada 250 on Sept. 3 in the No. 22 Toyota Tundra.
“For me, road racing is about rhythm,” Self explained. “While road course racing can sometimes be a challenge, it’s a challenge I embrace. With all the components that go into road course racing, I feel that getting yourself into a routine where you’re comfortable with the throttle, elevation, shifting and technique – I feel like it will put me in a better position to be competitive in Canada next weekend.”
Self, 21, will make his first ARCA start since the season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway in Feb. 2016. In 46 career ARCA starts, Self has one win (Winchester 2015), 13 top-five and 30 top-10 finishes. He also finished a career best second in the championship standings in 2015.
On road courses in ARCA, the Austin, Texas native has three starts with two top-10 finishes, including a career-high seventh at the New Jersey Motorsports Park road course also in 2015.
Despite never maneuvering Road America’s 14-turn course, Self is keeping his expectations realistic for Sunday’s race.
“I would be thrilled to have a top-10 finish,” said Self who will make his first ARCA start since Daytona 2016. “A lot of the same guys on this No. 33 ARCA team work on my truck, so it would a great boost for them to have a good finish at Road America and see if we can carry it to Canadian Tire next weekend.”
Tyler Dippel will return to the driving duties at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds on Sept. 4, while AM Racing development driver Justin Fontaine will return at Salem (Ind.) Speedway on Sept. 9 to complete the 2017 ARCA Racing Series season.
The Road America 100 (25 laps / 101.25 miles) is the 15th of 20 races on the 2017 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards schedule. Practice begins Sat., Aug. 26 with a forty-five-minute session planned from 8:50 a.m. – 9:35 a.m. Final practice has been etched in from 11:05 a.m. – 11:50 a.m. General Tire pole qualifying is set for later in the day at 5:10 p.m. The race is set to take the green flag the next day, Sun., Aug. 27 shortly after 12:00 p.m. The event will be tape-delayed on MAVTV, while ARCARacing.com will stream live timing and scoring throughout the weekend’s activities.
