Austin Wayne Self returns to New Hampshire eyeing another solid run

LOUDON, NH – Continuing to mount solid finishes behind the wheel of the No. 44 Don’t mess with Texas Chevrolet, Austin Wayne Self (@AustinWSelf) heads to New Hampshire Motor Speedway eyeing another top-20 finish in Saturday afternoon’s UNOH 175.

While the Austin, Texas native isn’t a part of this year’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) playoffs, there is still plenty left for Self and his team to accomplish as the checkered flag nears on the 2017 season.

With three top-20 finishes in four races steering the No. 44 Don’t’ mess with Texas Chevrolet, Self returns to New Hampshire hoping his short track experience will pay dividends and put him in contention for another solid showing.

“When you think about it, we have a lot to be proud of,” said Self. “This opportunity to drive for Martins and Faith Motorsports came together pretty quickly, but together we have kept our expectations realistic and I think we’ve overdelivered when it comes to our finishes.”

“If not for the late race issues at Bristol, we’d be heading to New Hampshire looking at four top-20 finishes overall. To me, that’s impressive.”

“This weekend, it’s more of the same for us. We just look to run our race and see what kind of finish we can put together. A good finish on Saturday will propel us towards one of my favorite tracks next weekend, Las Vegas.”

But, before Self can shift his concentration towards Sin City, he must conquer New Hampshire, a flat 1.058-mile short track with tight turns and crisp straightaways. Last fall, Self qualified 29th but found himself involved in a late-race accident and finished 29th.

“We had a good truck at New Hampshire last year, just didn’t have the result that we were looking for,” recalled Self. “Still, I learned a lot about the track and what it takes to maneuver, especially off Turn 4 to get that run down the frontstretch that you can carry into Turn 1.”

“The 21-year-old added that since New Hampshire is difficult to pass, qualifying is crucial towards having a good day at “The Magic Mile.”

“Even though it’s a short track, New Hampshire is still tough to negotiate,” he said. “For being a small team like we are, we feel like we can excel a little better on these smaller tracks. Hopefully, everyone will see that.”

“The closer we can start to the front the better our chances for a good finish will be. I appreciate the opportunity to drive this truck and earn another respectable performance for everyone who makes this race possible.”

In addition to AM Technical Solutions, Don’t Mess with Texas will serve as an associate marketing partner for Self’s 34th career NCWTS race.

Self, 21, is scheduled to remain the primary driver for the No. 44 Chevrolet Silverado for the remainder of the 2017 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season. Industry veteran Kevin Eagle will continue his role as crew chief.

In 11 races this season driving for AM Racing, Martins Motorsports and Niece Motorsports, Self earned a career-best second place performance in the season-opening NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway and earned an additional top-10 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, both finishes driving for AM Racing. Overall, Self has earned one top-five, two top-10, six top-15 and eight top-20 finishes respectively.
