The 22 AM Technical Solutions Cunningham Motorsports Dodge team has moved on from Winchester Speedway and is now shifting their focus to Chicagoland Speedway.
Austin Wayne Self celebrated the July 4th weekend in an ALL AMERICAN fashion, by racing American made Stock Cars! Self kicked off the weekend with practice on July 5th where the 22 team made adjustments throughout the day and focused on getting the car exactly where they wanted it. Austin Wayne Self ran p9 throughout practice with speeds reaching 108 MPH and lap times in the mid 16’s. Later that day during qualifying AWS ran speeds topping 110 MPH, though due to mechanical obstacles earlier in the day could only salvage a P14 starting position for the race.
Crew Chief Chad Bryant commented, “Winchester was not the performance we were looking for. It was disappointing for sure but we have to move forward to next week at Chicago. Chicago is going to be a really good weekend for us! We ran really well there last year with Ryan Blaney and I expect an improved performance this year with Austin. Chicago is a 1.5 mile track and our performance has been really good at those types of tracks this year. The whole CMS 22 team is working diligently to improve our performance this 2nd half of the season and Chicago should show a good result.”
Austin Wayne Self explained, “We were really optimistic entering this race, because of last year’s success. Unfortunately we struggled in practice, and didn’t get to make a mock run so we qualified outside of our target. I think given a few more laps we may have been able to make a run at it. If we would have had an earlier caution we would have raced for the win. We’ll chalk this one up as an experience run and move on.”
Austin wrapped up the weekend with a 10th place showing and resolved to be back in the fight starting at Chicago! Next on the schedule the ARCA racing series heads to Chicagoland Speedway. This track is a 1.5 mile tri-oval speedway in Joliet, Illinois, USA, southwest of Chicago. This track exhibits 18 degrees of banking in the turns creating for a momentum building run!
Austin Wayne Self said, “I am excited about Chicago. We are good at the 1.5 mile tracks, and the 22 has been fast there in past years. This will be where we make strides. With the past few weekends we’ve had, I feel like we need to bring the bar up. We are hunting for wins now and focusing on learning. I am appreciative of all that Cunningham has been doing to put me in fast cars, we’ve just had some bad luck, and we are gonna turn it around.”
Moving on to Chicago Austin Wayne Self is stationed 7th in points and currently leading the rookie of the year standings. AWS has collected 6 top 10’s in 7 starts.
